What is Kisspeptin-10? What it does, benefits and what the evidence shows

A short fragment of the hormone that tells the brain to start puberty and drive ovulation. Human trials show a big, brief LH surge, and some early work on IVF and sexual desire, but nothing establishes it as a treatment. Here is what the studies show, and what independent lab reports show (nothing yet).

Key facts

  • Kisspeptin-10 is the shortest kisspeptin fragment with full intrinsic bioactivity, and it stimulates GnRH neurons so the pituitary releases LH and FSH.
  • In the first human kisspeptin-10 study, published in 2011, an intravenous bolus raised LH in six healthy men from about 4.1 to 12.4 IU/liter.
  • In a 2015 comparison with five men per dose group, GnRH produced about three-fold higher LH than kisspeptin-10, while kisspeptin-10 and kisspeptin-54 gave similar gonadotropin responses.
  • In a 2015 phase 2 trial of 60 women at high risk of OHSS, a single kisspeptin-54 injection triggered oocyte maturation in 95% and none developed moderate or severe OHSS.
  • FDA added kisspeptin-10 to its category 2 list of bulk drug substances that may present significant safety risks for 503A compounding on September 29, 2023.
  • As of September 29, 2026, VendorVerify's database has no lab results for kisspeptin-10.

Kisspeptin-10 is the shortest piece of kisspeptin that still does the full job: it tells the brain's GnRH neurons to fire, which makes the pituitary release LH and FSH, which in men drives testosterone. In the first human study of kisspeptin-10, an intravenous bolus in six healthy men raised LH from about 4.1 to 12.4 IU/liter at 30 minutes at the best-responding dose (George et al., 2011). A later comparison in healthy men also found LH rising after intravenous kisspeptin-10 (Jayasena et al., 2015). What has not been shown is that any of it translates into a treatment, and we found no approved kisspeptin product in the sources we opened. Most of the human trials also used the longer form, kisspeptin-54, not kisspeptin-10.

What kisspeptin-10 is and how it works

Kisspeptins are named after the KISS-1 gene, which was first described as a metastasis suppressor in melanoma cells. In 2001 a group isolated 54-, 14- and 13-amino-acid peptides from human placenta that switch on a receptor then called GPR54, and named them kisspeptins (Kotani et al., Journal of Biological Chemistry, 2001). The oncology name stuck to the gene but not to the story: the receptor turned out to matter for puberty. People who lack a working copy of it fail to go through puberty and have hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, meaning the pituitary is not being told to release LH and FSH (de Roux et al., PNAS, 2003; Seminara et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 2003).

Kisspeptin sits above GnRH in the chain. It acts in the hypothalamus to stimulate GnRH, and GnRH then stimulates the pituitary (Tsoutsouki et al., Current Opinion in Pharmacology, 2022). That is the important difference from GnRH-type drugs and from HCG: kisspeptin works one step earlier, through the brain's own signaling. Kisspeptin-10 is what researchers call the minimal sequence with full intrinsic bioactivity (George et al., Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2011). A direct comparison in healthy men found kisspeptin-10 and kisspeptin-54 gave similar gonadotropin responses at the doses tested, while GnRH itself was more potent, roughly three-fold higher LH than kisspeptin-10, in a study with five men per dose group (Jayasena et al., Human Reproduction, 2015).

Why do people seek it out? Most of the interest is in raising the body's own LH and testosterone, with libido a distant second. We explain what the trials show about those effects below. We don't cover how to use it, including alongside other hormones or drugs; lab reports can't answer that, and neither can the trials.

What the research actually shows

LH and testosterone in men

This is the best-documented effect. In the first study of kisspeptin-10 in people, healthy men who received it intravenously had a rapid, dose-dependent rise in LH. The response was not simply larger with higher doses: the highest dose produced a smaller LH response than the one below it. A prolonged infusion in four men raised testosterone, and a lower-rate infusion raised LH pulse frequency and size (George et al., 2011). Those were four to six men per group. The authors concluded that kisspeptin analogues have therapeutic potential for regulating LH and testosterone, which is a hypothesis, not a result.

Two things limit how far that goes. First, an LH rise is a hormone measurement, not a symptom improvement. Second, the response depends on how the axis is stimulated: a review of the human data notes that continuous exposure produces desensitization, so the same compound can end up suppressing reproductive hormones rather than stimulating them (Chan, Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, 2013).

Women: it depends on the point in the cycle

In healthy women, kisspeptin-54 barely moved LH in the follicular phase, moved it a little in the luteal phase and moved it a lot just before ovulation (Dhillo et al., JCEM, 2007). That fits kisspeptin's role as the natural driver of the ovulatory surge, and it means a single number for "how much LH does it release" hides a large swing. In a small trial in women with hypothalamic amenorrhea (ten women in two groups), a first injection of kisspeptin-54 produced a large gonadotropin rise, but after a short course of repeated injections the response had shrunk sharply, though the women's pituitaries still responded to GnRH. No changes in LH pulsatility or ultrasound measures of ovarian activity were seen (Jayasena et al., 2009). A later review of therapeutic avenues describes tachyphylaxis as one of the pharmacological problems with the natural forms, alongside a short duration of action (Tsoutsouki et al., 2022).

IVF egg-maturation trigger

The furthest-advanced human use is in fertility clinics, not in the supplement world. In a phase 2, open-label, randomized trial of 60 women at high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), a single kisspeptin-54 injection triggered oocyte maturation in 95% of women, embryo transfers led to pregnancies and live births, and no woman developed moderate, severe or critical OHSS (Abbara et al., JCEM, 2015). A 2017 review called it a promising alternative to HCG or GnRH agonist triggers but said more studies are needed to establish the optimal trigger (Kasum et al., Gynecological Endocrinology, 2017). This is kisspeptin-54, given in a supervised medical setting, and it tells you nothing about kisspeptin-10 from a vial.

Sexual desire, mood and the brain

In 29 healthy men, kisspeptin versus vehicle boosted limbic brain activity in response to sexual and couple-bonding images and reduced negative mood (Comninos et al., 2017). A randomized crossover trial in men with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (32 completed) found kisspeptin-54 changed activity in the brain's sexual-processing network compared with placebo, and that penile tumescence in response to sexual stimuli and reported "happiness about sex" were higher on kisspeptin. The authors said it has potential as the first pharmacological treatment for low sexual desire in men, and the trial studied a single infusion (Mills et al., JAMA Network Open, 2023). That is promising but small and short. Our PT-141 guide covers a different, approved drug aimed at a similar goal.

Things it doesn't seem to do

Kisspeptin didn't change brain responses to food images or appetite ratings in 27 healthy men (Yang et al., 2021). And in 95 people given a biologically active infusion, it didn't change state anxiety, cortisol, blood pressure or heart rate, which the authors read as reassurance that kisspeptin doesn't induce anxiety in humans (Mills et al., 2025). Both are useful negative results: the animal literature had suggested metabolic and anxiety effects.

Side effects and risks

The honest summary is that the human studies are short, supervised and mostly intravenous, so they say little about unsupervised use over long periods.

  • What trials reported. The abstracts we read don't highlight a signature adverse effect, and the 2025 study found no change in anxiety, cortisol or blood pressure with an active infusion (Mills et al., 2025). No trial we opened tracked long-term safety.
  • Fading response. Repeated injections blunted the response in women with hypothalamic amenorrhea (Jayasena et al., 2009).
  • Hormone effects are the point. Kisspeptin-10 raised testosterone in men (George et al., 2011) and drives ovulation in women. Effects on a reproductive axis are effects on fertility-relevant hormones, and none of the trials tell you what happens when that axis is pushed outside a study.
  • FDA's view. Kisspeptin-10 is on FDA's list of bulk drug substances that may present significant safety risks for compounding under section 503A, added September 29, 2023. FDA says compounded drugs containing it may pose immunogenicity risk for certain routes of administration, may have complexities with peptide-related impurities and characterization, and that it has no or limited safety information for the proposed routes (FDA, Category 2 bulk drug substances, page current as of April 22, 2026). That is FDA describing missing information, not reporting harms.

What the lab tests show

As of September 29, 2026, VendorVerify's database has no lab results for kisspeptin-10. That doesn't mean vials are good or bad; it means no report has been submitted that we can count. If you have had a kisspeptin-10 vial tested, submitting the report is the fastest way to change that.

Because we don't have enough lab data on this compound to rank vendors for it, here are the highest-ranked vendors across all compounds right now. A vendor's overall record is a signal, not a guarantee for a compound they have never had tested.

Buying smarter

With no compound-specific data, lean on the general checks. Look at each vendor's full record and how many reports sit behind the score. Treat a vendor-posted COA as a starting point (how to read a peptide COA, fake peptide COAs). Paying for identity, purity and quantity testing on your own vial is worth it when there is no track record; how to get a peptide tested walks through it, and endotoxin in research peptides covers when to add that test.

If a report comes back with a fail, stop using that batch, tell anyone who bought from the same run, bring the report to the vendor, and submit it to VendorVerify. Buyers who research kisspeptin-10 often also look at gonadorelin and HCG, which act on the same axis at different points; the peptide hub lists every compound we track.

Database figures are from VendorVerify as of September 29, 2026. This isn't medical advice; kisspeptin-10 sold outside a licensed setting is unregulated and sold for research use only, and we found no approved kisspeptin product.

Figures in this article come from the lab results on VendorVerify as of Sep 29, 2026. The vendor and peptide pages always show the latest numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What does kisspeptin-10 do?

It stimulates the brain's GnRH neurons, so the pituitary releases LH and FSH. In healthy men, intravenous kisspeptin-10 raised LH sharply, and a prolonged infusion raised testosterone. It is a research compound; we found no approved kisspeptin product.

What are the benefits of kisspeptin-10?

The demonstrated effect is a short-term rise in LH (and testosterone, in men). Related work on kisspeptin-54 shows early promise for IVF egg maturation and for sexual desire in men with low desire. No trial shows a benefit from kisspeptin-10 for muscle, general hormone health or long-term testosterone.

What is the difference between kisspeptin-10 and kisspeptin-54?

Kisspeptin-54 is the longer natural form and kisspeptin-10 is its shortest fully active fragment. In one comparison in healthy men, both produced similar gonadotropin responses at the doses tested. Most clinical trials, including the IVF and low-desire studies, used kisspeptin-54.

Does kisspeptin increase testosterone?

In small studies of healthy men, yes, temporarily: prolonged infusion of kisspeptin-10 raised LH and testosterone. Those were four to six men per group under supervision, and continuous exposure is known to cause desensitization, so the studies don't show a durable rise.

Is kisspeptin-10 safe?

Not enough is known. Short, supervised trials of kisspeptin highlighted no signature adverse effect in their abstracts, and one study found no change in anxiety, cortisol or blood pressure, but there is no long-term data. FDA lists kisspeptin-10 among substances that may present significant safety risks for compounding, citing immunogenicity, impurity and limited safety information.

Is kisspeptin-10 approved by the FDA?

We found no approval for kisspeptin-10 or any kisspeptin drug in the sources we opened. FDA lists it as a bulk drug substance with potential significant safety risks for compounding under section 503A.

Is kisspeptin the same as gonadorelin or HCG?

No. Kisspeptin acts in the hypothalamus to make GnRH release; gonadorelin is GnRH itself; HCG acts on the gonads like LH. All three touch the same axis at different points. See our [gonadorelin guide](/blog/what-is-gonadorelin) and [HCG guide](/blog/what-is-hcg).
